Translation workshops

07-04-2018

On 14thMarch 2018, the seventh edition of the translation workshops was held at the Departments of English Philology and Intercultural Communication. The title of this year’s edition “Poland in other words” alluded to the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence celebrated in 2018.

The workshops began at 9 am at the College auditorium in Kazimierza Wielkiego Street. The invited participants and guests were welcomed by the Rector of Krosno College, Prof. Grzegorz Przebinda and Dr Bartosz Gołąbek, Director of the Institute of Humanities. The official welcome was followed by Dr Władysław Chłopicki’s lecture. The speaker brought up the issues of untranslatability and strategies for translating the names of phenomena and objects related to the Polish culture, the translation of which requires not only the linguistic knowledge but above all the knowledge of Polish traditions and history.

After the official part, the practical work began, during which English, German and Russian groups struggled with the topics proposed by the organisers of the workshops:

English groups:

-      The winding road to the Polish door, or how to show a foreigner round?

-      The myth of the Polish plumber

-      A landscape with a look or landmine in the background. Traps in the translation of local publications

-      Disco polo goes international

-      Polishness in simultaneous interpreting

-      Pierogi, ravioli, dumplings – translation tastes

-      Humankind in exile, life after life – a glossary of the science-fiction world from “Eclipse Phase”

Russian group:

-      The translator’s ups and downs: Translation of “The Master and Margarita” by M. Bulgakov

-      Kubuś or Fredzia? Examples of the problems with translating proper names

German group:

-      Kraków/Cracow in the eyes of a German writer

The workshops were attended by:

-       students of Krosno College: Dual Studies in Translation and Culture (years I-III), International Communication (year II), English Philology (year II)

-       students from local secondary schools: ZSP no 5 in Krosno, LO in Jedlicze, ZSP in Jedlicze, ZSP no 3 in Krosno, ZSO in Brzozów, I LO in Brzozów, MZS no 4 in Krosno - II LO in Krosno, Jan Szczepanik ZSP no 1 in Krosno

As in previous years, the workshops sparked a keen interest of all participants. This year's edition is behind us, but we are already looking forward to the next one.
